On Veterans Day, November 11, 2022, American Legion Post 360 hosted a fundraiser in the heart of downtown Warrenton. The event was a huge success, with many attendees coming out to show their support for local veterans and their families.
One of the highlights of the fundraiser was the poppy giveaway. Poppies are a symbol of remembrance for those who have served in the military, particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The tradition of wearing poppies on Veterans Day dates back to World War I, when Canadian physician Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote a poem called "In Flanders Fields" about the red poppies that grew on the graves of fallen soldiers in Belgium.
The American Legion has been promoting the poppy as a symbol of remembrance since 1921. Each year, members of the Legion distribute poppies to raise awareness and funds for their many programs that support veterans, including financial assistance, education and employment resources, and healthcare.
At the fundraiser, attendees were encouraged to make a donation in exchange for a poppy. Many people took the opportunity to show their appreciation for the sacrifices made by local veterans and their families. The poppy giveaway was just one small way that the community came together to honor those who have served our country.
